Freestyle Colstey Cross Country
Report by Malcolm Bates

The Mid Wales Trail Riders Association ran the first round of their Winter cross country series - sponsored by Freestyle Motorcycles - in the beech and pine woods of the Welsh marches on the 29th November 2015.

The conditions were sticky on the ground after the torrential rain that fell on previous day. The weather was dry on Sunday morning as the competitors started but it was not long before the strong wind blew in relentless rain that soaked everything including the riders. Despite all the rain the course stood up well with a solid base beneath the muddy surface that resulted in few deep ruts developing.

The event was split into two groups. The Ironmen opted to tackle four hours while the others choose the more civilised three hour race,

The Ironmen were flagged off first. There was just one expert. Jack Lee made the long trip from Northamptonshire but he only posted 6 laps.

There were two Expert teams. Joe Wootton was out for the first time following his leg injury at the Six Days in Slovakia. He joined his brother Ben to post 16 laps - two laps ahead of Wyn Hughes and Bo Anderson.

Martin Williams was the best Ironman clubman - a lap ahead of Cefyn Games while a good entry of veterans saw Martin P Jones finish just over a minute ahead of Kevin Rogers. Several sportsman took the challenge of a 4 hours race with Sion Jones finishing a lap ahead of Luke Rogerson.

In the three hour event Shaun Buchan was out on his MRS Sherco for the first time. He  finished just over four minutes ahead of Rheinallt Davies in the expert class. Both managing 12 laps. Roy Broomfield finished three laps ahead of the rest of the field in the clubman class. The first three veterans all completed 10 laps with local rider Colin Griffiths obviously - no stranger to the local weather - heading David Wright and Aled Jones, Also on ten laps was leading Sportsman Richard Wozencroft with a cracking ride a lap ahead of Mat Verrin and Martin Walker.

Congratulation to the MWTRA team for battling gale force storms to put on this excellent event.
