WULFSPORT WINTER HARE SCRAMBLES SERIES
FINAL RD - LLANDRILLO FOREST 7th Feb 2016
Report : Keith Williams

The weather last weekend did nothing to dampen the spirits of the riders that took to the start line for the final rd of the WOR Events Wulfsport Winter Hare Scrambles series set in one of the clubs Llandrillo Forest blocks.

A flowing and enjoyable 6 mile lap was on offer for both the Quads in the morning race and the Solos in the afternoon race, both races running for 2hrs straight.

Starting at 9.30am in the Quads it was Martin Benbow, again mounted on a Suzuki Farm Bike that put in the fastest times to secure the overall win. Benbow had a turbulent first lap but managed to track down Stephen Williams who led the race for the first few laps, Benbow eventually taking a 2 minute advantage with both riders on 8 laps a piece after the 2hr battle. Latecomer after oversleeping in his motor home in a lay-by near the event was Simon Lang whom despite joining the event 1 hr late, managed to rack up 4 laps on his Can -Am.

Graham Guy topped the Clubman 4x4 class with a fine ride ahead of Mark Williams and Dave Dixon in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Young Danny Percival topped the 2wd Clubman class with a great ride as headed home Ben Dean and Steve Farthing. The quads again put in a superb effort to tackle the proper enduro course and all the finishers fully deserved their plaudits and well done's come the chequered flag.

Later in the day a 12 noon start saw the solo riders away on a slightly modified track to tackle the forest challenges that lay ahead. Ryan Heinz on his KTM 350 was the first man back to lap scoring and he led the race from start to finish with a very determined ride to secure the race win and indeed the overall Wulfsport Winter Championship in the Expert class. Martin Wells did the same in the Expert Veteran class too, Hole shotting the event, Wells then did enough to secure the points needed to win the series in his class.

Paul Engerlen was in great form in the Clubman category and finished 2nd overall in the whole race. Roy Broomfield on the big 501 Husky finished 2nd on the day but did enough to secure the Clubman title for the championship. A special mention must go to Glesni Jones on her 125 Husky as she was in top form blasting the little revver to a fine 3rd spot in the Clubman Class, Jones only just lost the runners up spot on the last lap as Broomfield nipped past her.

Top Clubman Vet was Jeremy Mold who also did enough to win the class for the series too. Mold is improving every ride and fully deserved his 9 laps. Runner up and also on 9 laps but a couple of minutes down on Mold was Simon Wright. Wright had not been on his bike for 6 months but came back showing he had lost none of his speed or gusto to make the podium. Third spot went to Rob Pearce matching the top two riders 9 laps.

Sion Jones was again a Young man on a mission and he matched his Sister, Glesni's performance of 9 laps to take the Sportsman class win and indeed the championship in that group. Always improving and showing smooth speed and skill, Jones was over a minute clear of second placed Dewi Davies and Matt Verrin topped out the podium with Titus Blackwell chasing him down also in 4th spot.

It was close in the Sportsman Vets with Lee Sephton, Emyrs Price and his Brother Bryn Price in 2nd and 3rd spot. All 3 did 8 laps each with Sephton having a healthy 6 minute advantage at the sharp end. Sephton winning the series too in his respective class.

Duncan Humphrey on the 300 2t Husky was going well after having not flowed the first 2 laps. He won the Over 50's on the day and the series with ease awith a strong and smooth ride. Runner Up in class went to Guy Standring with Stephen Heinz in 3rd spot.

It was a Husqvarna 1, 2, 3 in the Youth class with Chloe Richards and her Twin Brother Declan taking 8 laps each, a 4 minute advantage going to Chloe. Robert Francon was the 3rd spot pushing his 125 2t to 7 laps.

Matt Connell has put in massive effort over the last few months to get better and better and his workload paid off as he secured his first win in the Novice group. Sherco 300 mounted Connell was the only rider in class to make 9 laps and if form carries on like this the Sportsman class looms imminently for the improving rider. Runner Up on the day was Joe Beddoes with Leon Dean in 3rd spot with another determined ride.

Results

The event went well with all the riders having enjoyed the set out of the course and the huge variation in terrain on offer. The series started in Sunshine back in October but each event after that was run in pretty challenging conditions making it a true Winter Hare Scrambles series. WOR would like to thank Wulfsport for their continued support of this championship. Also as always a massive thank you goes out to Landowners, Staff , Caterers, Medics and of course most importantly the riders for making the events happen.

WOR now move into a very busy period with a 2 day playday special at their brilliant little Sand Quarry in Stoke next weekend on 13/14th Feb (over 120 turned up for this last time) followed by the MICHELIN TOUGH ONE Extreme Enduro on Saturday 20th February which will see David Knight try to take his 7th Tough One title with challenges from Hells Gate Winner Wade Young , Paul Bolton and the rest of the best. The Putoline Hare scrambles series then kicks off in March as the club return and introduce some brilliant old and new venues back into the events calendar in this superb championship.
