For Rhayader’s first evening event of the summer the going was declared heavy to soft but that didn’t stop over fifty competitors enjoying a good work out at the club’s Cwmythig ground. The experts were first off and it was fast starting William Jones who held off eventual winner Adam James for quarter of a lap before Adam took control and proceeded to pull away from the field he wasn’t far off lapping Jones at the flag, the only rider he didn’t In the clubman class the early leader was Sonny Parker, however with just 6 laps completed he struck bike problems and was force to drop out leaving Jamie Jenkins to inherit the lead and at the finish was a clear lap ahead of Rhys Lewis and Joe Davies. In his first adult event youngster Rhys Roberts finished a fine fourth place.
The Sportsman class saw Llandrindod youngster to the fore with Brett Griffiths leadin until 2 laps from the end, only to be passed by James Griffiths to take his maiden win.. Brett did well to hold off Harrison Weale for second at the flag. Another up and coming youngster Jordan Kendrick-Jones rode excellent in the sticky conditions to finish fourth. Results
Conditions for this year's Jack Frost Enduro couldn't be more different after last year wet and slippery conditions this year it was replaced with dust and warm sunshine to make an enjoyable start to the Mid Wales endure scene. With the dry conditions the route times caused little problems so it was all down to the two short and sharp special tests with Welshpool's Joe Wootton (Freestyle Husqvarna) topping the experts with the two fastest tests of the day closely followed by Charlie Evans (ET James KTM) and Tim Foreman (Voltcom KTM) with new to the experts class Andrew Bull (ET James KTM) and Garin Rosser (Voltcom KTM) completing the top five.
In a large sportsman class it gave a good taste of enduros for those new to the sport with Simon Hamer proving the quickest around the test with Bill Bradford runner up, Harrison Weale third and Brett Corbett Griffiths fourth, these three covered by just five seconds. Photos - Results
With rain showers promised through out the for once the Rhayader club got the better of the weather with dry condition throughout the three hour Simon Rees Hare n Hounds. Local riderShaun Buchan enjoys the Cwmthig Hill track and even with course reversed he took an early lead in the experts class and consistently increased this every lap to finished well clear of Tim Forman and Rheinallt Davies. These two fought hard in the early stages but Forman manage to open a gap to end four minutes ahead of Davies at the clock. There was also local success in the clubman class where Aaron Martin managed an extra lap to demote Luke Rudd to second while in the Over 40 class finally Martin P Jones got some luck at Rhayader events after failing to finish the last two events this time he saw the finish just a minute ahead of Ryan Leary for a well deserved victory. A large Novice entry saw five riders complete 17 laps with Ben Price less a minute ahead of Jack Barret at the lap with Olly Hunt just a further 15 seconds adrift. In sportsman class for beginners Kevan Price took victory but Shaun Wall of Llandrindod in his first event took the best local beginner and with it the prodigious Simon Rees Cup along with fourth in the class. The event is always popular with sidecars and a good turn was lead by current British Champion David Williams with passenger Simon Brown who lead away from the start followed by Matt Taylor/ Simon Morgan crew and Jonathan Williams and Neil James. These two pairing pushed the Williams and Brown throughout the first hour but a crash detuned the Taylor/Morgan pairing to leave Williams/James sidecar in second place followed by the consistent team of David Francis and Anthony Mills in third.
The experts started first and at the end of lap one it was Shaun Buchan leading closely followed by Marc Evans both showing why they have been picked for the Welsh Six Days Team. These two were pursued by the rest of the experts with leading clubman Adam James in amongst them. James reveled in the wet conditions and he had soon worked his way up to third overall behind Buchan and Evans.
In the Veterans Over 40 class Andy Watkins finished almost a lap ahead of Jonathan Williams while in the Over 50 division Colin Griffiths did enough to finish in third in the younger class, and was followed home by Malcolm Davies, Andy Williams ans club stalwart Carl Addison. In a large Sportsman class Martin Lewis and Lister Morris rode hard for the whole two hours with Lewis finally getting the better of Morris with Roger Lovatt third.
Rhayader MC were busy again this week with an Extreme Hare n Hounds event featuring two forty five minutes legs over rocks, roots, tyres and mud. New harder sections were added to last year’s course & rain showers prior to the start made all these sections very slippery & tricky. In the Pro class the super smooth Lee Edmondson (Llandrindod Wells) took two wins from hard charging Carl Jones, while Owain Humphreys took third place overall from brother Gethin. Edmondson tackled all sections with ease & was only once threatened by Jones who led for the first two laps on heat two. In the experts class William Jones got the better of Chris Walton (Rhayader) in the first leg with Matt Willey (Llandrindod Wells) third. Chris Walton went on to win the 2nd leg ahead of Jones to take the overall too. Matt Willey again secured third place, gaining with it third place overall.

A damp evening greeted a bumper entry for Rhayader Motor Club’s first Hare n Hounds of the year at their Cwmythig Hill circuit. First off were the Experts who made light work of the sticky conditions with local Dakar rider Tim Forman and Shaun Buchan leading a host of experts riders, Buchan lead into the final lap but the machine stopped on the out on the moto cross circuit with plug trouble to hand Forman the win and move Jonathan Roderick Evans up to second and Marc Evans to third all three on 14 laps while fourth man Adam Rees just failing to beat the clock and had to settle for thirteen laps. The clubman class left no room for error with all of the top ten finishing on 13 laps, top of these was local rider Adam James who had over a two minute lead at the flag ahead of Kairon Watkins with Aaron Martin just 13 seconds adrift. Former top Moto Crosser Andy Watkins topped the Over 40 class well ahead of Robert Prosser with Andrew Prosser completing the podium all on 13 laps. New for this year was an Over 50s class and competition was just as fierce as the younger classes with Colin Griffiths eventually taking the top spot. The bulk of the entry was in the Sportsman class full of novice and beginners with Brett Griffiths snatching the holeshot from the start and holding the lead for the first four laps before being over hauled by Luke Davies who was returning to the sport after a long lay off. At the flag Davies had pulled out a two and a half minute lead over Ben Prosser with Ieuan Morgan third. The Clubs next event is an Evening Extreme Hare ‘n Hounds on Wednesday 12th June. Rhayader
MC With competitors arriving at the start with tales of falls of snow on their way to the event, it was a surprisingly snow free if foggy start area for Rhayader’s Jack Frost Enduro at Bwlchysarnau. For the first time the club had included experts in the entry and these headed the entry on the first of six laps on a very sticky course through the woods. After three quite relaxed laps the experts time schedule began to tighten and by the final lap the experts were working hard with just Rheinallt Davies managing to finish clean on time followed by Charlie Evans just one minute down. Charlie had plenty of reasons to tell the lads at the finish just what had caused him to drop those vital few seconds. After these two next was Gethin Francombe four minutes down and Joshua Gotts a further minute adrift. The clubman schedule also tested the competitors with local trials rider Jonathan Rowlands in his first enduro and Danny Morris the only clean sheets with Rowlands getting the verdict being that little bit quicker on all three tests, these two were followed Timothy Saunders and local rider Adam James out on a brand new KTM, both dropped three minutes on the going and swapped best times in the first two tests and tie the final test to leave Saunders just two seconds the better of James. Paul Davies back competing after a knee injury curtailed his season last year showed he a force to be reckoned with in the Over 40 class losing just one minute on the going which was matched by David Stokes but far better tests times saw Davies a clear winner. The beginners class really suffered in the conditions and many gave up the fight but some to their credit battled on and the winner was another Danny Morris who even managed to stay clean on time to finish ahead of Tim Wilkinson. As the first round of the ACU Classic enduro championship there was a good turn out of twinshock machines , these were a real handful in the conditions but in the experts class Llangollen’s Ian Barnett was flying to drop seven minutes next best on the going was reigning champion Andy Elliot but three quicker tests by Rob Poulton saw him overhaul Eliot for second while the same thing happened in the clubman class with Sam Davidson best on the going but losing out to Paul Cook overall due to Cook’s better special test results.
An excellent entry of 67 riders competed in Rhayader Motor Clubs 10th annual running of the "Simon Rees memorial" Hare 'n Hounds at Cwmythig Hill last Sunday. The Club had set out a 3-mile circuit including the popular Hillside motocross circuit as well as nearby fields, which resulted in some excellent racing in all classes. Local hotshot Shaun Buchan (Llanidloes) led the Expert field early on, but hot on his heels was Welsh 6 day Enduro team members Rheinallt Davies (Machynlleth) & Gethin Price (Hundred House). By the end of the gruelling 3 hour non-stop race it was Davies who took the honours with 18 laps to his credit, while brother Gareth Davies (Machynlleth) took runner-up spot 4 minutes adrift, while Price finished third just under 30 seconds behind Davies. On-form Alwyn Watkins (Bwlch-yr-Sarnau) swept up the Clubman class with a great performance completing 17 laps, while rival youngster Adam James (Rhayader) had to settle for the runner-up spot; just a couple of minutes separated these two. Huw Jones (Machynlleth) took a very creditable 3rd place 2 laps down on Watkins. The Novice class saw Will Taylor (Machynlleth) take the win with 15 laps just beating off nearest rival Sion Thomas (Machynlleth) by 2 minutes. Steve Price (Brecon) finishing in 3rd a close 7 seconds down on Thomas.
Topping the Beginners class was youngster Kairon Watkins (Kington) completing a well earned 15 laps, Joe Barker (Llandrindod Wells) took runner-up spot in his 1st event, also taking home the Simon Rees Memorial Cup (for the best local beginner), third went to Lister Morris (Brilley) 14 laps, while Keiran Price (Kington) took 4th place & Brett Griffiths (Llandrindod wells) taking home a fine a fine 5th place. Taking the honours in the Motocross group was Rhayader's Ryan Jones completing 16 laps. As well as catering for Solo's, Rhayader Motor Club also had a large Sidecars group. Top in the Sidecars section were the on-form David Williams/Graham McPhee (Llanidloes/Rhayader) with 16 laps, Brothers Neil & Marc Rowlands (Llanidloes) finished 2nd, 4 minutes adrift of Williams/Mcphee with Simon Bradford/Simon Morgan (New Radnor) 2 laps down in 3rd.
Rhayader Motor Club would like to thank all marshals, club members & landowners for their continued support in making this event happen.
A good entry of over 40 riders competed in Rhayader Motor Clubs Hare 'n Hounds at Cwmythig Hill last Saturday evening. The Club had set out a 3-mile circuit including the popular Hillside motocross circuit as well as nearby fields, which resulted in some excellent racing in all classes. Local hotshot Shaun Buchan (Llanbister) led the field away from the mass start, but hot on his heels were Tim Forman (Newtown) & Carl Jones (Glanamman). Buchan's lead was short lived though as he slipped off his Yamaha soon after the start, Buchan remounted but eventually pulled out with bike problems after only 4 laps.. Foreman & Jones continued to battle it out during the early part of the race until Forman pitted with a misfire on his KTM. By the end of the gruelling 2 hours non-stop race it was Jones who took the honours with 21 laps to his credit, while Owain Humphreys (Llanffestioniog) took runner-up spot a lap adrift of Jones. Third went to Gethin Humphreys (Llanffestiniog) who recovered well after losing time at the start failing to start his KTM. Rhayader Youngster Adam James took a well deserved victory in the Clubman class competing 19 laps. Another excellent performance saw Aaron Martin (Llandrindod Wells) take runner-up, just under 4 minutes behind class winner James, while Rhys Davies (Llandinam) secured third place a further 2 minutes adrift of Martin.
On-form William Jones (Pontrhydfendigaid) swept up the Over 40's class with 19 laps, while Andy Prosser (Brecon) secured runner up spot just over 2 minutes behind Jones. Another close battle saw Colin Griffiths (Bishops Castle) fend off Simon Morgan (Builth Wells) for third place, Griffiths narrowing beating Morgan by 25 seconds.
Despite another week of rain and heavy showers throughout Saturday the Rhayader club had a good entry for the first of their evening hare n hounds and by the time the start flag dropped the rain had ceased. The experts lead the way around a three mile route featuring the club's famous moto cross course and surrounding fields, unsurprisingly the going was heavy but riders circulated well barring a few falls on the slippery corners.
James obviously won the clubman class but he was pushed all the way by another local lad Alwyn Watkins who did enough to finish a creditable fourth overall, third clubman rider was Katie Walker who despite being a lap down from the leaders beat some good clubman riders with her best finish at the venue. A large Over 40's class saw fitness play its part with former expert rider William Jones finishing a clear lap ahead of occasionally rider Simon Morgan who was covered in mud after lap one but preserved to take the runner up berth a lap ahead of Jonathan Williams. The Beginners class were always going to work hard in the conditions but they worked hard with just three failing to make the finish. Top of this class was Kairon Watkins from Brecon's David Armstrong and Caersws' Harri Clarke.

After the disappointment of cancelling their famous Evening Moto Cross the Rhayader were club were back in business this week with an Extreme Hare n Hounds event featuring two forty five minutes legs over rocks, roots, tyres and mud. In the Pro Carl Jones on his Frontrow GB KTM was fast off the start and made the early pace followed by Charlie Evans, Rheinalt Davies and Andrew Edwards, Lee Edmondson made a steady start on his brand new HM Honda but soon got into his stride steadily picking up places and with Rheinalt suffering chain problems was soon on the heals of Carl and by mid race distant took the lead to hold to the flag followed by Jones and Evans. Jones again took the early lead in the second leg but this time Edmondson made a better start keeping second place in the early laps before taking the lead again to finish a minute ahead at the finish. Rheinalt Davies pressed hard to catch Jones for second place but had to settle for third at the flag but wasn't enough to take third overall with Charlie Evans' third and fourth places sufficient to take the final podium place behind the dominant Edmondson and Jones. In the experts class Llanbister's Shaun Buchan got the better of Neil Thomas in the first leg with Chris Walton third and Jonathan Evans and William Jones fourth and fifth. With all to play for in the second leg disaster hit both Buchan and Evans at the 25 minute mark forcing both out of the event leaving Chris Walton to inherit the lead and with it take the overall win while Neil Thomas could only manage a second leg fourth this was enough to secure second overall in front of a much improved second leg for William Jones who finished just behind the winner Chris Walton.

Rhayader MC decided to try something new for their Wednesday evening event by holding a two 45 minute legged extreme event over a 2 mile course featuring the usual extreme hazards of tyres, rocks and logs. Nearly 50 riders and an excellent crowd turned up to see the action and all voted it a great success with the hazards tricky enough to cause make the riders think and entertain the crowd. The first leg saw 9 pro riders quickly get on the pace with moto crosser turned enduro rider Jamie Lewis quickly take an early lead followed by Tim Foreman, Gethin Price and Dylan Jones. A bad start by Lee Edmondson saw him come from the back of the pack and gradually work his way past up into second behind the flying Lewis who past the finish line with under a minute to go to post 11 laps while Edmondson took second just five seconds in front of Price who overtook Foreman in the closing stages to finish third.
The large clubman class had fun discovering what hazards they could manage and work out were the chicken runs better options and the first leg proved a two horse affair with local rider Marc Evans holding off young Liam Garbett, on paper Evans did ten laps to Garbett's nine however Evans just managed to beat the clock at the finish to put that extra lap in while Liam, who picked up a rear wheel puncture midway through the race, was just 13 seconds too late to do the same.
The Expert class saw a repeat of the first leg with Hughes and Buchan setting the early pace however with just one lap to go Hughes went missing when he damaged the back brake of his Husky forcing him to retire and allowing Buchan the win followed home by Adam Rees. Marc Evans again took the clubman class win finishing nearly two minutes ahead of South Wales rider youngster Jack Powell while first leg challenger Garbett started a lap down whilst repairing his puncture, finished well down the field. Rhayader MCC held the second & final round of their Saturday Evening series at Cwmythig hill on the 24th July. A week of intermittent showers had sprinkled the ground & the course was in perfect condition. As an extra bonus the club had included most of the MX track into the 4 mile lap but not the Ski Jump & the Wall of Death for safety reasons. A good entry of 85+ riders dragged themselves away from the dubious pleasure of watching Britain has got rubbish on the television to take part in a cracking reality show. The weather was warm & dry but heavy clouds threatened rain. The race started at 6.00pm. Tim Foreman took the holeshot on his Steve Plain GasGasUk 300 from George Wozencraft & Simon Bradford. Aled Price & Daniel Williams both got a flyer off the line in the Clubman class. In the Vets class Colin James took the holeshot. It was the highlight of his night as he later retired.
Thanks to the Rhayader club. Good course & a great atmosphere. Results - Photos
Rhayader M.C held the first round of their Saturdaay Evening Hare 'n Hounds on the 3rd July at Cwmythiig Hill. The 4 mile course had served as the Welsh 2 Day Special Test the week before but it was in excellent condition. It snaked over the open hillside & for the most part it was easily visible to the spectators in the paddock. Alan Bates dropped the flag on the Experts at 6.00pm & Lewis Belfield took the holeshot. Lewis picked up points at the European Enduro Championship round in Poland last week & he would be busy this weekend. As well as Rhayader on Saturday he would be competing in the Powys on Sunday. The Experts were followed by the ranks of Clubman, Over 40s & Sportsman. The forecast rain showers did not arrive during the day & the dust was a problem as the riders jockeyed for position in the opening laps but there were few hidden surprises. As the race progressed the soft sandy soil heaped up on the corners to form little dunes that absorbed the wheels. The bigger bikes ploughed their way through & Andy Watkins on a 450 KTM was the overall winner with 18 laps from Chris Morris on a 450 Suzuki. Lewis Belfield was 3rd. Ryan Faulks was the best Clubman & Marc Evans was the runner up. Andrew Cooper was 3rd Aled Price 4th & Matt Willey 5th. They all completed 17 laps. Wyn Hope won the Vets from Andrew Prosser. They also clocked up 17 laps. Before the event Wyn said "i enjoy riding as much today as I did 20 years ago". Rhian George was the best Lady - with 15 laps - ahead of Theresa Keightley who did well to clock up 13 laps on a big Yamaha 450. Thanks to the Rhayader team for a cracking evening.- Results - Photos
Rhayader MCC held their Jack Frost enduro on Sunday 15th March at the Saintswell Off Road practice centre near Bwlch y Sarnau but - despite overnight clear skies - there was no frost as the mild early spring weather continued & there were no complaints. The club limited the entry to 100 riders to give everyone a bit of space, Both checks were at the start. The first stage was a 10 mile loop around the Red Lion. The second stage was a couple of miles consisting mostly of the special stage around the practice track. There were 3 classes & the schedule was 6 laps for clubman, 5 laps for Over 40s & 4 laps for beginners. Marty Jones from Knighton - pictured left - got plenty of fresh air
after a week preparing his club's BEC round 2 paperwork. Darren Jones from
For the Clubmen the times on the long stage tightened from 30 minutes to 21 minutes & the Vets had to keep pace with Clubmen for their 5 laps. Clerk of the Course Chris Price laid out a lap that avoid some of the toughest parts of the Red Lion but there was still plenty of mud to go around. As the laps counted down there were fewer & fewer riders with time to spare chatting by the yellow flag. MXer Charlie Evans (right) from Llanidloes was the winner on a Gas Gas 250 from Rhys Davies & Andy Muller was third. They were only 3 Clubman not to drop time. David Price from Builth Wells was the Best Vet from Brecon's Neil Williams. Simon Evans from Wrexham was 3rd. Half the vets finished clean on time. Spencer Eve from Llanidloes was the best sportsman.
