PAUL BOLTS TO THE PUTOLINE CATTERICK 100 Win
Results
After 15 months of negotiations with the M.O.D, Dirtbike-Traxs finally arrived at the Catterick Military Training Area. But the conditions were strict for the Dirtbike-traxs crew who were allowed in on foot and Mountain bike from the 23rd Dec until the 26th Dec, then from the 27th motorised vehicles were allowed. As everybody tucked into their Christmas festivities the crew worked relentlessly plotting and marking the course, revising it where necessary in order to get around the really boggy sections made worse by the month of torrential rain. By the 28th the crew had devised a truly awesome track to test the riders on. As customary at all DBT events the track was ready for inspection from 9am on the 29th.
Comprising of open rough grassland going in to 4 wooded sections some of which had wide ditches which were bridged in order to keep everything flowing. With the occasional white fire road to give the rider a chance to get their breathe back and just a kilometre before the end lap a challenging rocky climb. The course was 17 kilometres in length meaning the winner would only have to complete 6 laps, with a ride time for an expert of 26 mins average per lap.
As Saturday dawned the weather was horrendous with severe rain making the going harder. Through the early hours of Saturday morning winds of 70 mph and torrential rain lashed the venue, the DBT crew where up at 2:30am to take down the lap scoring gazebo and before daylight the team were repairing the course.
With Dirtbike-Traxs having to turn away over 100 entries the massive entry of over 350 riders were ready for the competition ahead. 10 AM saw the 30 Expert riders off; followed by the Clubman, Over 40 and Sportsman. Paul Bolton on board his KB Racing Gas Gas and Justin the Daddy Wilson riding his new Sandiford CRF 250X swapped places during the opening lap. With Paul coming into lap scoring first he then started to edge away from the Daddy. With a smooth controlled ride Paul completed 6 laps to reach the 100 kilometre goal. Beating the Daddy by 2 min 12 sec these two where a long way ahead of 3rd placed man Nathan
Wrigglesworth. 4th went to Anthony Aryton, 5th place went to Richard Copsey on board his dbt ktm 300 who was going well early on, until he took a heavy fall but with grit and determination struggled to the end.
In the Clubman class Johnathan Hughes completed 6 laps, a lap head of the ever improving and dirtbike-traxs regular tim patterson 2nd, lee smith got a well earned 3rd dave wood with consistent laps came 4th and Dave Cook 5th.
The Sportsman class struggled with the ditches of doom, many of them found them difficult in the wet conditions. Chris ball completed 5 laps which would have given him a good result in the clubman class from john Bolton 2ND,dave savin 3rd, rob cartwright 4th and sam wood 5th.all the sportsman should be given credit no matter how many laps they completed the event was much harder than we expected
In the Over 40’s Class Big Dave Selkeld took his CRF250X to win, getting to grips with the conditions early on, and completing 5 laps, one ahead of rob swinbank 2nd, with anderw Holland 3rd,regular dirtbike-traxs rider phillip brown took a well deserved 4th and d mcbeth 5th completing 4 laps.
Talking to race co-ordinator John Kerwin at the end, he stated “The race was hard due to the wet conditions, but we are in winter and it’s to be expected. The area is fantastic, it’s a shame this is the only time of the year we can use this venue. But the riders revelled and enjoyed themselves in the muddy conditions. With another fantastic entry, we must thank the riders for their continuing support. I finally must thank the dedicated DBT team who with over 350 competitors dealt with the proceedings in a totally professional manner, everybody knowing what they were doing and when. This ensured the start and the race went perfectly, and thanks to the result team for their speedy service. See you all on the 28th Jan at Ellington Banks Ripon for the climax of this fantastic championship.”
