ROUND 3 NREC CHALLENGE SERIES NORTH RIDING ENDURO CLUB WET AND WILD AT CAMPHILL Sunday the 19th of August saw the 3rd and final round of the North Riding Enduro Club Challenge Series, it was held in the Camphill plantation near Bedale in North Yorkshire. Nearly 100 riders turned out to what they all hoped would be a dry event but it poured down throughout the night before the race. NREC organizers brought in a pump to try and reduce the water level in the infamous "bomb hole" but as fast as they pumped the water out the heavens were filling it. The track was approximately 4 miles long and consisted of mainly woodland going, there was a bomb hole with optional chicken run, and new sections of wide flowing track were added to this years course which ran very well and allowed riders to pass with ease. 11 O'clock saw the first group of riders off the start line this included the experts and championship class who rode for 3 ½ hours followed by the clubman class who rode for 3 ¼ hours then the Sportsman, Moto X, Over 40's and Twinshock classes rode for 3 hours. The rain held off until the race was underway, light drizzle kept the track wet and very slippery for most of the day. The Sportsman race was won overall by Nik Rowbotham who completed 9 laps followed by Dale Wilson 2nd and D Fowler 3rd both on 8 laps. New to the sport 16 year old rider Ben Pattison completed a very respectable 7 laps and earned himself 3rd position in the Sportsman E1 class and 12th overall. The Clubman race was dominated by Richard Dakin who rode 11 laps, 4 minutes behind Dakin in 2nd place was Colin Chapman also on 11 laps, 3rd place went to Phil Corner trailing Chapman by just under 2 minutes. Camphill saw the return of local Rider Steve Carver, Steve managed to complete 10 laps in the Clubman class, a great ride considering a long absence from racing and failing to get his KTM started on the line. Clubman rider Alex Trigg crashed hard on lap two and needed medical attention, NREC marshals and medics responded superbly to assist Alex at the trackside who was eventually airlifted from the scene with a badly broken leg. Top Over 40 riders were all NREC regulars, Steve Parry aboard a KTM300EXC took the win on 11 laps closely followed by Dave Salkeld also on 11, Nigel Hutchinson was 3rd on 8 laps. NREC included a Moto X and a Twinshock class, the MX class was won by Chris Wilson on a Yamaha YZ125. Stephen Watling rode 4 laps on a SWM 250 in the Twinshock class and never even looked at the Chicken run around the bomb hole! Runner up on a Honda Glen Bailey also passed the bomb hole with ease, well done lads! Top Expert was Daniel Field riding a KTM125EXC 2nd place went to Dave Nellis on a KTM250 followed by Mark Raynor also on a KTM250 all 3 clocked up 12 laps. Championship class rider Vince Harker was riding alone as the only other Championship rider Luke Lusher retired after 1 lap with a clutch problem. Although Vince rode 12 laps to take the Championship class first place and clock the fastest lap it was Expert rider Daniel Field who was the fastest rider on the day being nearly 5 minutes faster than Harker. Liaison Officer Peter Weatherill was delighted with the way the track ran throughout the day "the track was very slippy and challenging for all riders, despite the wet conditions the track continued to ride very well" NREC Chief Marshal Andy Cooke "the event ran extremely well and was a fantastic team effort from everybody involved, thanks to all the riders who stuck it out until the end". Special thanks to our medics and Ambulance / Air Ambulance Staff. Also many thanks to the landowner Robert Ropner, Yorky Bar Catering for supplying top quality food, and all the marshals and helpers who made the event possible.
