DAKAR 2009 UPDATE
The start of the 2009 Dakar Rally is confirmed as Buenos Aires in Argentina on 3rd January, which will begin the 9,000km route (6,000km of specials) through Argentina and Chile to the half way and rest point in Valparaiso. The South American Dakar is expected to consist of a more varied terrain than that of North Africa, with a typical day being able to incorporate the heat at the coastline through the colder and more extreme altitudes and conditions of the Andes Mountains before returning to sea level. The route will not be centralized around airstrips as per the traditional rally, so the bivouacs will be more secluded, thus making for much more off-road navigation and crossings for the support vehicles. 5 days of dunes will be integrated into the route making for a similar variation of sand and tracks as per a normal Dakar Rally All the main factory teams and primary manufacturers have been confirmed for entry to include; - KTM, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, plus BMW Logistics will be extensive thus technical scrutineering will take place in a European port that is yet to be confirmed. This will happen towards the end of November and competitors will not need to be present as the administration checks will be done in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 1st and 2nd January 2009. All indications point towards the entry for Dakar ’09 being just as large and competitive as previous Dakar Rallies. Entries will open on 15th May ’08 giving a one month priority to those who entered the 2008 Lisbon to Dakar Rally. Entries will close on 30th June with the confirmed entry list being released on 31st July. The ASO will have an official press conference on 14th/15th May in Paris where all potential competitors will be invited
