Bolton by Bowland Report and pictures dirtbike dawgResults Main Event Youth Sportsmen The abnormal summer weather played a major part in the out come of the 7th round of the National Putoline Hare Scramble championship, with the course in good condition up to the weekend, but the rain started on Saturday with drizzle and worse was to come. The youth race went off well so the decision was made to continue on Sunday, but during the early hours of Sunday morning torrential rain set in through the night and this was going to make the course extremely difficult for most riders, with the famous bowland hills and off cambers claiming the riders and forcing early retirements. The youth racing got underway at 2 pm on Saturday with the senior b and junior riders, the conditions were ok and the youth riders were circulating around the course. in the senior B class Billy Grimmer took the win from Davey Todd both riders completing 8 laps third place was Ayrton Aldridge on 7 laps Becca Dawson had her best result in the senior B finishing 4th, in the junior class on there small wheeled 65 machine Harrison bell on his ktm put in an outstanding performance to complete 6 laps , 3 laps ahead of second placed Billy Steinman and Charlie Robinson in third all the youth riders coped with the conditions extremely well and on this basics a decision was taken to run the adults .
Dirtbike-traxs held the 6th round of the uk's best supported hare scramble championship at the popular Gisburn venue, once again attracting 400 riders to the weekends proceeding, with the unpredictable summer weather causing havoc with events around the country, the Dirtbike-traxs team were subjected to 15 hours of rain which started early Saturday morning and did not ease until 10 pm Saturday night. This caused havoc with the car parking and track, but the experienced dbt crew modified there plans for both car parking and the track, unfortunately the revised car parking was a long way from the start & DBT would like to thank the riders for there understanding over this .The youth races for the juniors and senior B riders got underway at 2.30 pm Saturday with the conditions wet and slippery for the young riders, in the senior B class Billy Robinson and Joe Deakin swapped the lead during the first hour with Joe Deakin taking the win, in the juniors Luke flack was the victor from Harrison bell second and Michael Tatham third,, it was hard work for the riders and there machines in the wet conditions and congratulations are in order to all the youth riders that raced. As Sunday dawned the conditions had changed dramatically, the sun was shining but the underfoot conditions were still very wet, this would cause the sportsmen problems early on. The first race which got underway at 9 am, had 220 sportsmen novices and senior A youth riders. With a race duration of 2.5 hours The track had undergone major revision due to the conditions the famous Barnes Banks were out. As the leaders came back to time control for the first time young DBT rider Liam Ward on his yam 125 in E1 came through the newly constructed Putoline rock and log section first, a lead he was to hold for the first hour until he suffered throttle trouble despite this he hung on to finish in third place, Rob Wright emerged to take the E1 win from Chris Berrill (who had led up to the 2 hour mark), while in the sportsman open class Peter Carr took top spot from Richard Spencer and Ryan Patrick in third. By the time the race had ended the track conditions had changed dramatically for the better, the hot sun and light breeze had dried the track out so much that the DBT team were busy remarking in the famous Barnes Banks ready for the main race of the day. At 12.30 the expert line blasted off with Justin the daddy Wilson collecting the RAS sport hole shot award he eased into an early lead chased by Sandiford Honda rider Paul Bolton and mps husky mounted Gav Houson ,as the leaders descended into the woods it was Bolton who emerged at the extreme section first chased by Wilson , as the race progressed the lead would change many times between Wilson, Houson and Bolton. As Bolton and Houson went out for the last lap, Houson held a small lead over Bolton, Bolts made a mega last lap charge to take the chequered flag from Houson, but his efforts were in vain as he had refuelled earlier out on the course resulting in a dnf. Houson picked up first place second place going to hard riding biff smith, in third Jason Crosland, Justin Wilson suffered a rare mechanical breakdown on his Race FX ktm. This leaves the championship wide open, all the top experts are all still in with a chance of taking the generous prize fund provided by the UK's leading off road motorcycle oil company Putoline, The clubman class E1 was won by rob Taylor from Damian Butler and Harry Hillas in third, the open class honours were won by Pete brown in first followed by Anthony cooper and in third Marcus firth all 3 completing 12 laps, over 40 rider Brett Haley was a lap clear of John Lofthouse with Anthony Crowe in third. Talking to the DBT clerk of the course at the end, "Its been a hard day for the riders especially the sportsman riders with the track being greasy early on. A big thank you to them for sticking to the track and keeping land damage to within the confinds of the course, I can not believe we have been hit by the weather again, but we still ended up with a great week ends racing". The weekend started on the Saturday with one of Dirtbike-traxs popular KTM training/academy days, with 5 hour of quality instruction the riders came back to the start area with smiling faces and having learned some new techniques , The weather had been hot a sunny all week and the track if anything was to dusty and would cause problems, but at around 5am Sunday morning we had some rain just enough to dampen the track , the weather would then hold out until the last 30 mins of the expert/clubman race.
In the 040 class Mick Kendal won on 14 laps from second placed Jack Twentyman also 14 laps jack may have got the win if he had started on time, 3rd place Rob Butler on 13 laps.. Team sponsor Ray Woolhead of Insight Consultants invited D3-Racing and Tom to round 2 of the Dirt Bike trax series as it's his local track and he was sure the circuit would suit Tom and his KTM 250 EXC. The Dirt Bike Trax team had prepared a fantastic circuit for round 2 of their popular series and nearly 500 riders were treated to Tong Hall in its very best conditions over 2 days. This is without doubt one of the best cross-country tracks in the country, but if the weathers bad it can also be a different story. The course of around 12 minutes in length is mostly mixed woodland, streams and gulley's, lots of rocks and roots and very slippy fire roads which claim many who are over ambitious with the throttle. Tom once again did not have the best of starts and was away mid pack in the huge expert line up, early leaders were Ryan Voase, Mark Jasckson and Si Wakeley but within a lap Tom had put on a charge and moved from around 15th to quickly take the lead and looked to be enjoying the slippy conditions. At the end of each lap riders were faced with a short cut through the "rocks of doom" or a longer chicken run, most of the experts tackled the rocks and riders such as Tom, Paul Bolton, Graham Jarvis and Mark Jackson entertained the spectators with their trials skills making them look so easy. With a clear track in front Tom concentrated on pulling out a gap on the chasing pack and after 4 laps had a lead of around 2 minutes, further back Ryan Voase and Wakeley traded positions with Ryan eventually getting the better of Simon and pulled out a good 30 second gap. Tom rode the whole race without incident at a comfortable pace and during the last half hour upped his pace to win by nearly 3 minutes. Tom Sagar "I am really pleased that Ray of Insight Consultants invited us to Tong, this tracks awesome and although very slippy after last week in Sweden on ice this was a breeze, my start was not so good but I'm used to that now and just got on the gas to pass everyone and really just paced myself after that. It's also great to get another win as I have had so many 2nd and 3rd places recently". Result: 1. Tom Sagar D3-Racing, KTM 250 EXC 2T 2. Ryan Voase, Kawasaki 250 2t 3. Simon Wakeley, MPS Husqvarna Next Event: Rd 3 Fast Eddy cross-country championship, Pilsworth, Lancs D3-Racing Team Sponsors: Van Bodies Lancaster Ltd, Insight Consultants, KTM UK , Triple-D Motopsport, Metzeler, Motorex, Acerbis, Scott, Sidi, Airoh, KTM Powerwear, Renthal, Regina Chains, WP Suspension, PG Graphics. Round 1 National Putoline Hare Scramble Championship
The build up to the event had been busy for the True Grit crew. Paddy Langhan recovering from a serious knee injury had been hard at work driving a machine regrading parts of the course, while the rest of the crew were plotting new routes for the massive entry, which had toped the 500 mark , truly outstanding for a hare scramble event. The course was over 8 miles in length the course used a mixture of young plantations gravel tracks , rough grass fields and an interesting quarry with a ride time of 20 mins for an expert rider which meant refuelling for the expert riders would be critical could you get away with 1 stop or 2 refuelling stops. With a new trade area which was well supported by the industry and a new race format things were set for a truly great event.
Sunday again saw the weather in fine form, with bright sunshine, with the changes having been made to the course from the previous days youth race. the adult racing got under way at 9am with a sportsman novice race, with over 200 riders taking to the course, the race duration was set at 2 hours, the sportsman open class was a close fought affair with Stephen Suddes taking the win from many smith by a 3 minute margin in third place was Stuart Bland all three riders completed 6 laps. Sportsman E1 class was won by Anthony Pye the only E1 rider to complete 6 laps in second place was peter carr third place going to martin Austin In the newly introduced novice class Stephen booth took the win from Sean Massey second and Joseph Christlove third. The marshals now had a short break in which to catch there breath back before the main event of the day. the expert clubman/040 race. With the level of interest in the championship high a fine field of expert riders had come to contest this the first round At 12.15 the start signal was given and the experts were off, Biff Smith on his Dave Clarke racing Husaberg 450 took the RAS Sport hole shot award. As the expert riders came through lap scoring for the first time motocross star David Campbell was in the lead closely followed by Mark Jackson Eurotek KTM 200 & Justin Wilson (top) riding his new Race-FX KTM 250 in 4 place. As the race progressed the leadership changed but as the 2 hour mark came Justin Wilson was out in front on his own. Paul Bolton after a poor start had now worked his way in to second place passing Gav Houson,. As the 2hour 30 race duration came to an end Justin Wilson had secured a winning margin of 2 mins and 29 sec over the smooth riding Gasgas man Bolton, with Gav Houson in third, Eurotek's Mark Jackson getting a solid fourth place with factory Dave Wright Sandiford Honda in fifth all completing 8 laps, the expert battle provided the hoards of spectators with some excellent racing, In the clubman open class Ripon rider Steve Watson took the win from young Andy Noakley riding his Robinson backed ktm 250. True Grit Off Road can be very pleased with the weekends proceedings all the races ran on time.
