Round Eight National Putoline Hare Scramble Championship

Lusher Grabs Driffield Victory

The TGOR team had been working away for weeks to plot a new course around the old airfield site at Driffield, with the use of some massive stubble fields. The lap times for the better experts would be twenty minutes. With some showers over the previous days the course was in excellent condition for the penultimate round of the national putoline hare scramble championship. With lots at stake regarding championship positions and another big entry of three hundred had come to enjoy the weekend's action.

As Sunday dawned the weather was kinder with no heavy rain, on a shorter course with the duration of ten minutes for the quicker riders. 9am saw the youth riders set off on a ninety minute hare scramble. In the 12 to 15 year group Andrew Knoakley (left) and Harry Hillas battled it out. with Andrew taking the win from Harry both completing nine laps. These two riders could hold their own in the clubman class such is their ability. In third place was Ashley Crossley completing eight laps. In the 8 to 11 year group the spoils were taken by the newcomer Joe Wooton who was the only rider to complete eight laps. Luke Flack took second place and Davey Todd was third both on seven laps. TGOR's Martyn Field said it was great to see how well supported our youth event has become. and the high standard of competition in this class.

11.15am saw the main race of the day, from the off Justin Wilson took the lead, not by much from RAS TM rider Gav Houson, Mark Godfrey and DBT Honda teamster Luke Lusher. After twenty minutes the riders came back to the lap scoring area with Justin in front by the narrowest of margins from Houson, Godfrey and Lusher. Justin was not his usual self and failing to give 100 percent ,as his daughter had an accident in the kids race and was having treatment to a leg injury. Into the second lap Justin crashed heavily injuring his wrist and collarbone. This left Gav Houson and Mark Godfrey continually swapping the lead until they collided which allowed Luke Lusher to take up the lead. Coming around for the third lap he had built a commanding lead over Gav Houson and mark Godfrey, who were in turn followed by the chasing pack. Luke refuelled first, and thanks to a super quick refuel was back out infront. DCR berg mounted Biff Smith was making steady progress towards the front , as was Lincoln Brewster on his KB Gas Gas. On lap four Biff Smith took second from Gav, despite having to refuel for a second time On lap six , Luke emerged ahead of the berg man Smith, putting in a big final effort over the closing stages. Smith could not close the gap on DBT Rider Luke Lusher. Luke took his first win in this prestigious championship from Biff Smith. Third place and the best E1 went to RAS sport rider Gav Houson, KB Gas Gas mounted Lincoln Brewster took fourth place while Mark Godfrey finished a solid fifth and the best E3.

The clubman race saw Aaron Dougdale back to the lap scoring first followed by Paul Shires. These two would swap the lead over the early laps of the race, before Aaron pulled clear to take the lead. On lap seven James Clift pushed to the front. Aaron must have been tiring as Steve Watson passed him on lap eight and took second place. James Clift took the overall Clubman win by a 78 second margin over Steve Watson with Aaron in third all completing nine laps.

In the competitive over 40's class Burnley's John Lofthouse riding a KTM took the honours from Cumbria's Rob Buttler despite nursing a shoulder injury. In third place was David King. All three riders completed nine laps.

The sportsman class was fought out by Anthony Cooper on his 200 KTM and Craig Reynolds on his KX 125 swapping the lead throughout the race. These two finished with in thirty seconds of each other. The win going to Ripon man Anthony with Craig taking second place and best E1 rider. Third place went to Tom Edwards. All three riders completed eight laps.

The TGOR team put on another outstanding event doing justice to this ever popular championship. There is still everything to fight for in many of the classes, especially the experts as we go into the final round at Gisburn Lancs on the 17th September. Finally TGOR would like to thank everybody that helped especially Dan Field and Paddy Langhan. See you all on the 17th for the last round of the championship.
