Knighter third at ’06 Endurocross

Check out the Video Final

KTM Enduro Factory Team Farioli rider and defending AMA Endurocross champion David Knight finished in third place at the ’06 running of the Las Vegas staged Endurocross event. Posting the third fastest time in the pre-event qualifying session Knight then topped his heat race comfortably to pass straight through to the main event. Starting well the Enduro 3 world champion got tangled together with several riders exiting turn one and spent the early laps of the final catching up to leaders John Dowd and Nathan Woods. Despite closing the gap on the leading duo Knight was unable to catch his rivals and finished third.

Advised by his doctor not to travel to Las Vegas and compete in the ’06 Endurocross after being admitted to hospital just four days prior to the event after collapsing at home, Knight, having been given a clean bill of health, opted to defend his AMA title and looked strong having topped his heat race.

Getting a perfect start and rounding the first turn out front Knight made no mistakes and claimed a comfortable win ahead of Homero Diaz and Destry Abbott in heat race three. In winning his heat race Knight joined John Dowd and Nathan Woods in passing directly through to the final.

Knowing that a good start was vital Knight lined up next to Dowd and followed the former US motocross and supercross star around turn one. But as he exited the most important corner of the event, a corner that had already seen many riders hit the deck and fail to qualify for the final, he got hit from behind and all but crashed.

Forced to work hard and pass riders as quickly as he could, while trying not to make any mistakes himself, David eventually moved into the third place spot and initially started closing the gap on the leaders. But with the track arguably less technical than in previous years, and with neither Dowd nor Woods making any mistakes, Knight was unable to catch the leaders. Easing his pace with two laps to go while at the same time hoping that the two riders ahead of him would make a mistake David crossed the finish line third having won the event in ’05 and finished as runner-up in ’04.

David Knight: “I thought I had it off the start but some guy on a Kawasaki pinned it and crashed and ended up taking me out as well. I got hooked up on a log then and got bashed out of the way by a load of other riders then. I just had to try and catch up as best I could after that, and get back passed the riders that had got ahead off my in turn one. Unless you’re up at the front of the pack it’s so hard to make up any time and if the riders ahead of you don’t make any mistakes it’s so hard to catch them.

“The track wasn’t as technical as in previous years, only the rocks could catch you out really. It was just hard to make any time up. Once I was in third I knew that unless Dowd or Woods made a mistake I’d struggle to finish higher than third so it was a bit of a lonely race for me really. I was still trying as hard as I could until the last two laps. I could see that I wasn’t catching them so I just hoped that they might take each other out, which almost happened.

“I really enjoyed the event, but of course I’m a little disappointed not to have won again. The organisers did a great job again and it was great to see that the event was a sell out. I’ll be back next year and riding hard to win again.”
