An excellent entry of 120 riders competed in Rhayader Motor Clubs 5th annual running of the "Simon Rees memorial" Hare 'n Hounds at Cwmythig Hill last Sunday. The Club had set out a 4.5 mile circuit including the popular Hillside motocross circuit as well as nearby fields, which resulted in some excellent racing in all classes. Six Day regular Tim Forman (Llanidloes) led the field away from the mass start, but hot on his heels was Wrexham's Andrew Edwards, but by the end of the gruelling 3 hour non-stop race Edwards had narrowed the gap to a few seconds until getting stuck in a bog on the last lap leaving Forman to take the top honours with 17 laps to his credit. The Motocross class saw the on-form Chris Morris (Crossgates) sweep up with 16 laps, while Chris Price (Llandrindod Wells) secured runner up spot with a creditable 15 laps. An excellent performance by Carl Davies (Knighton) saw him easily win the Over 40's section by completing 15 laps beating off second placed Trefor Davies (Newtown) by 1 lap. The biggest class of the day saw local farmer Andrew Evans (Rhayader) take the Novice class win with 14 laps just beating off nearest rival John Jones (Machynlleth) by just over 30 seconds. Shaun Price (Swansea) & up and coming youngster Shaun Buchan (Llanbister) battled it out for the third spot but after some furious racing "Fast Buck" came out on top just 9 seconds in front. George Wozencraft (Rhayader) went away with the premier award in the very competitive Clubman section with 15 laps, while other locals to feature in this group were Marc Evans (Abbeycwmhir) & Adam Rees (Bwlchysarnau) in 2nd & 3rd places respectively. Topping the Beginners class was Llandinam's Stephen Woosencraft completing a well earned 14 laps, runner-up & winner of the "Simon Rees Memorial Cup" was Rhayader's' Aled Price who had a fantastic ride in his first adult event. As well as catering for Solo's, Rhayader Motor Club also had Quads & Sidecars groups. Topping the Quads group was David Lloyd Jones (Caersws), one lap ahead of runner-up Iwan Jones (Caersws) while David Horner (Brecon) finished third. Top in the Sidecars section were the on-form locals David Williams/Graham Mcphee (Llanidloes/Builth Wells) with 13 laps while another local crew Neil & Marc Rowlands (Llanidloes) finished a fine runner-up. The Club had set out a 4-mile circuit including the popular Hillside motocross circuit as well as nearby fields, which resulted in some excellent racing in all classes. Unluckiest rider of the day must have been Over-40 class rider Alan Ryland (Builth Wells) aboard his 49cc ultra fast Kentucky Trash Masher who was really looking good up until the half way stage, but unfortunately he fell into the only water puddle on the circuit, near the lap scoring shed & drowned out his machine, resulting in one of the bike's stabiliser's breaking off. Alan did eventually mount back on, but with his confidence knocked from one of the stabiliser's missing he didn't really get going again. Topping the Beginners class was Hereford's Brian Hill completing a well earned 16 laps, runner-up & winner of the "Simon Rees Memorial Cup" was Abbeycwmhir's Marc Evans also on 16 laps, third went to Haydn Bowen (Llanidloes) who finished just 14 seconds behind Evans.
