With the entry & the temperature soaring into the 80's on the day,
the appropriately named SWEAT club's inaugural Enduro News Hare &
Hounds certainly lived up to it's name. The event was the 2nd round of the
East South Wales Hare & Hounds Championship & took place at Jeff
Miles' Motoparc, Mynnydd Islwyn near Blackwood on Sunday 16th July.
In a quality Experts class Greg Evans on a KTM 250f (pictured left) led
from the start but at the 2 hour point he was overtaken by Derek Bawn
(Yamaha YZ250f). For the next hour, the two riders embarked on a finely
contested duel with only feet & seconds separating them & - at the
end of 3 hours & 90 miles - it was Derek who took the win from Greg by
less than 2 minutes. Dakar rider Nick Plumb must have felt at home in the
heat & dust. He finished 6th. WOR Events' powerhouse - Steve Ireland -
took a busman holiday to test a new factory Gasgas 450. It suited him
& he was in 3rd after 2 hours but he retired before the end to
conserve his energy for a hectic week ahead preparing the 4th Round of his
GBHS. His mate - Gareth Lloyd - stuck it out to the end to win the Best
Veteran. Adrian Whitcombe celebrated his 16th birthday by putting in an
impressive 15 laps on a big wheel 85 to take the runner up award in the
Sportsman class. First round overall runner up - Andrew Keyte - retired
with a holed crank. He was philosophical about getting his first
"mechanical" out of the way.
It was a day of blistering heat & blistered hands but everyone
seemed to enjoy themselves. The event raised £75 for the Welsh ISDE team.
Steve Ireland said "Great day, lovely
place and very nice people."
