Max Nagl tops the MX1 podium in Uddevalla Sweden
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Max Nagl of Germany wrapped up a perfect orange weekend in Sweden on Sunday for the factory team with a 1-2 result in MX1 to take the Swedish GP in Uddevalla. Nagl's win concluded one of the most successful weekends for the Red Bull Factory Racing team this season, crowning the other GP victories of team-mates Rui Goncalves in MX2 and Steffi Laier in the Women's World MX Championship penultimate round. "I'm very happy. This track was good for me and good for my bike. I want to dedicate this victory to my mechanic. He's from Sweden so it was his home GP," Nagl said immediately after the race. Nagl had his typical good start in the first moto and was a winner all the way but in the second race his arch rival championship leader Toni Cairoli took the start advantage. Max held his nerve and managed to stick on his wheel throughout the race to finish a comfortable second, enough to secure the overall GP win. Max Nagl: "I had two good starts today and I felt like I was in good control right through the first race. I won it without problems and I did it with a good winning margin. I also had a good start in the second race and even though Cairoli was in front, I managed to keep pace with him and I didn't ever give up. I always had in my mind that I could have a good fight with Toni. That's good for us riders and the competition and it's good for the spectators. Now I know that the championship is not over yet. Ken (de Dyker) for sure will be fast in Lommel and also in Lierop but I also like these tracks and there will be some very good fights. Stefan (Everts, the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team manager) has been helping me with the lines because I lost some time on Toni and we will work together on this so I can be strong for Lommel. I am second in the standings now and I know there is a big gap between me and Toni but my goal was to be in the top three. No w I'm not scared to dare to hope to go for the title. I have never been this far in the championship before." While The Italian Cairoli still has a dominant 53-point lead in the standings, Nagl was able to consolidate his second place and extend the gap between himself and third placed David Philippaerts of Italy. Stefan Everts also had some encouraging words for his MX1 rider and his team saying: "Max now has made a bigger gap to Philippaerts and now we must never give up because Max will also be good in Lommel. This weekend our riders have done a great job but so have our mechanics. Let's all of us in the team keep going like we did this weekend!" The MX World Championship now takes a three week break before resuming at the beginning of August on the sandy surface of Lommel in Belgium. Results MX1 1. Max Nagl, Germany, KTM, 25-22—47 2. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Rui Goncalves on Sunday continued to colour the MX2 GP season orange when he notched up his fourth victory with a confident 2-1 result on the Uddevalla circuit in western Sweden. While Goncalves had to concede to speedy your German Ken Roczen in the first moto, KTM's Portuguese rider came back hard and strong in the second to win the race and seal the GP on the gravely surface of the Swedish venue. Rui is now just 10 points shy of second placed Gautier Paulin in the season's standings and the win has kept his championship title hopes alive. Rui Goncalves: "Today I had a 1-2 result and that's very good for me and for my team. We won all three classes so it's a great team and a great job. Ken (Roczen) passed me in the first heat and he was very fast so I tried to keep pace with him and be happy with second place. Then I went out and tried to do my best in the second race. I tried to have a good start and to quickly get into my rhythm and that made all the difference. This win has been very good for my confidence because I have had my ups and downs during the season and I've had some very tough moments. Now I am fighting for the title and I will keep giving my best no matter what. I will fight and try to win the championship." Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team boss Stefan Everts was clearly satisfied that his rider line-up had won all three GPs staged at Uddevalla this weekend. He thanked both his riders and mechanics. "Our riders did a good job but so did our mechanics. Rui was very good today and now he's just 10 points behind Paulin. He still has a good chance to win the title." Joel Roelants of the KTM Factory Junior Racing team also had a great result. The young Belgian rider finished in fifth overall after steadily improving all weekend. Joel Roelants: "Yesterday was not great in timed and free practice but the qualifying okay and today I rode quite well in the first race. I was third at the start and I ended up fifth. Then I had a bad start in the second race and had to work my way back up from twelfth place. I managed to finish in fourth place. I had a good feeling and there were not so many riders who had lap times like mine. Now things are going better for me and this gives me confidence especially for the next GP in Lommel, which is my home GP. It really gives me good hopes for the next race." Results MX2 GP 1. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Steffi Laier wrapped up the sixth round of the Women's MX World Championship on Sunday with another win in the second race Sunday morning to preserve her perfect scorecard for the GP in Uddevalla, Sweden. The German rider set the pace for what was to turn out to be one of the factory team's most successful racing weekends this season with victories not only in the women's championship race but also in the MX2 and MX1 GPs. After winning the opening race on Saturday evening, Steffi closed out her weekend's racing by putting more than seven seconds between herself and her nearest rival in the second race. In fact, since French rider Livia Lancelot, Laier's arch rival in the women's championship is out through injuries, Steffi has completely dominated the women's competition. She can now go to the seventh and final round in Lierop on August 30 with excellent chances of coming away as the world champion. Steffi Laier: "Finally I can say I have a good chance to win the title. I will now go to Lierop and try to ride the same as I did today. This was a good race weekend for me in Sweden. I like the track very much. In fact I can say that when it comes to the racing surface, the track at Uddevalla is my favourite, just as from the point of view of technical challenges, I like the Portuguese GP the best." Except for one race in Portugal where Laier was disqualified from one moto after a marshal unwittingly assisted her to lift her bike after a crash, she has never been less that second in any race. She has also won seven of the 12 motos in the competition so far. Result: Round Six of Seven 1. Steffi Laier, Germany, KTM 25-25—50 2. Maria Franke, Germany, Kawasaki, 22-22—44 3.
