Dabill eager for more success in Marseille

Following his best ever series result at round one of the 2010 SPEA FIM Indoor Trial World Championship at Sheffield, promising British rider James Dabill - Gas Gas is now looking to cement his position amongst his elite rivals. The twenty-three year old is hoping he can follow up this result with another top placing at the second round in Marseille, France this coming Saturday.

“Prior to Sheffield I think my best result was a sixth place finish indoors, so to get into the top three was a big improvement for me, and I hope I can repeat that performance in Marseille.” said a clearly very motivated Dabill. “The team and I have worked really hard over the winter months, so to come out feeling fresh and get a podium at the very first round feels like a worthy reward for our efforts.”

“It obviously felt really good to get my first indoor podium in Britain, too,” continued Dabill. “To be honest I was a bit surprised with my result and it took a while to sink in. But it was great to do it in Sheffield in front of a home crowd. That’s something I will not forget in a hurry.”

Dabill relegated one of the pre-season favourites, Adam Raga - Gas Gas, to fourth place by virtue of a tie break in Sheffield to secure his first ever World championship podium. This result, if nothing else demonstrated that the plucky Gas Gas teamster from Leeds has benefited from his decision to train with Raga in Spain during the winter.

“I think being in Spain definitely helped bring my riding on a lot. I went out at the beginning of December and stayed until Christmas, and being able to ride my bike regularly made a big difference. If I was in Britain I would probably have ridden three or four times in a similar three-week period, but in Spain the weather was so good I could ride every single day. What is more, I was training alongside the best riders in the World, so that helped too.”

A fixed rider in 2008, Dabill did not compete in the 2009 SPEA FIM Indoor Trial World Championship and, because he has been out of the fray for twelve months, it is difficult to know how he will fare as the season progresses. The reigning British champion however is optimistic that his result on home soil could be the catalyst for a brighter future on the World scene.

“I had not really set myself a target for the indoors,” said Dabill. “I just wanted to improve and take it one round at a time. However, now I know I am capable of performing well at that level I want to remain consistent and push for a podium again"
