Fausto Scovolo wins round 1 of the Italian Championship
Rocchetta di Vara, La Spezia - 10/11th April

The Italian Championship started at 8.30am from Rocchetta di Vara, a picturesque village in the Var Valley in the province of La Spezia under a threatening sky from grey clouds. The event was organizing the Motoclub Valley Vara, led by it's chairman Stephen Moggi, in collaboration with the Moto Club La Spezia Motauri AM. It attracted an entry of 289 riders.

There were 3 laps of 40+ kilometres. The 130 km course was very technical and almost entirely offroad with very little road going. There were two special stages. The first - close to the start was a 4 mile long woodland test & the second was a motocross style test that snaked for 2000m over the hillside.

Alessandro Goldaniga retired with a suspected broken wrist. Daniel Corrent also went out after stretching his neck muscles, and Mauro Moretto, withdrawn due to shoulder pain from an injury suffered during a previous fall in training.

The race was won by Fausto Scovolo on a Gas Gas.
