FIM Press Release

FUJINAMI TAKES THE WIN IN PORTUGAL ON DAY TWO

Having not won a round since 2008, Takahisa Fujinami - Repsol Montesa scored a slightly surprising victory during the second day of the Portuguese Grand Prix, which brought round two of the 2010 SPEA FIM Trial World Championship to a close. With Albert Cabestany - Sherco taking the runners' up spot for the second day in a row and Adam Raga - Gas Gas finishing third, Toni Bou - Repsol Montesa was a shock absentee from the podium.

In yet another low scoring event, championship leader Bou showed that he is only human as he twice fived section nine to leave himself in a tie break situation with veteran campaigner Dougie Lampkin - Beta for fourth position. Toni would eventually beat Lampkin on most cleans at the end of a day he would no doubt rather forget. Thankfully for him it was his Japanese team mate who captured the twenty valuable championship points.

Although the organisers had made changes to the sections ready for day two, in truth these really did not add the severity that was perhaps needed. Confirming this point, Fujinami recorded lap scores of three and one to win on a total of four marks, which was less than what Bou had dropped in just one section. Cabestany showed great consistency to keep Raga at bay, who typically fought back strongly on the second lap.

Whilst Fujinami prouduced the best closing lap - just a single dab - thirty four year old Lampkin showed that he can still mix it with his younger rivals, as he matched Raga's second lap total of two marks, to close in on Bou. Dougie's eventual fifth place would demote his team mate Jeroni Fajardo - Beta down into sixth, as Jeroni failed to make it into the top five on either day after having showed so much promise in Spain.

Having missed out on the win yesterday after losing out on a time tie breaker, Junior rider Patrick Smage - Sherco made sure that he was not going to be robbed for a second day in a row as he delivered a faultless performance to record his first ever win at this level. French rider Guillaume Laniel - Gas Gas followed Smage home, as Sweden's almost unknown Emil Gyllenhammer - Gas Gas completed a surprise podium respectively. With Alfredo Gomez - Montesa finishing down in seventh spot today, Smage now leads the overall Junior standings by a single point over his Spanish rival.

In the Youth category Carles Traviesa - Gas Gas followed up his second place on Saturday with a convincing win today, with the young Spanish rider dropping just a single mark over the two laps. Italy's Ismael Catalin - Gas Gas and Romain Riguad - Gas Gas from France were two more shock visitors to the podium this weekend, as they finished second and third respectively in the Youth class. Series leader Pol Tarres - Gas Gas could only place fourth, but still heads the championship table, if only by a single point from Traviesa.

After a hectic opening couple of weekends, the 2010 SPEA FIM Trial World championship will now enjoy a short break before resuming in Japan for yet another double header during the first weekend of June.
