Kickstart – The Return – Lampkin and Rathmell go head to head once again

After much speculation L+M Events, the organisers of the UK leg of the 2010 SPEA FIM Trial World Championship at Nevis Range, Fort William – Scotland, can now finally reveal details of their Kickstart - The return event that will take place on Friday 25th June, ahead of two days of full blown World championship action.

Behind the scenes the L+M Events team has been re-creating the obstacles that defined what remains one of Britain’s best known and much loved TV programmes during the eighties, ready for their field of star studded past masters. After much persuading both Martin Lampkin and Malcolm Rathmell will reignite their rivalry, as the Yorkshire duo return for a one off ride after many years in retirement for this unique event.

Many rear tyres may have been worn out since these Tykes won their respective World and European titles back in the mid seventies, but neither has lost that true winners’ instinct. Although neither have gripped a pair of handlebars in anger for several years, Sherco importer Rathmell and event promoter Lampkin still never miss the opportunity to exchange some sharp banter each time their paths cross.

Martin and Malcolm are hardly likely to have it all their own way as they battle it out over a course that will include such favourites as the see-saw, bunny hop board, limbo circle and balance beam along with many other obstacles typical of the original format. Former Kickstart winner and longstanding UK Beta importer John Lampkin will look to return to his glory days when he lifted the famous trophy back in 1983. The ex Fantic factory rider will be up against his old adversaries, as he will be joined in the arena by ex Works Yamaha pairing of Harold Crawford and Gerald Richardson.

Whilst Harold and Gerald are no longer World contenders in their own right, both remain regulars on the international circuit as minders for Alexz Wigg and Jonathan Richardson respectively. Another man who has enjoyed a long trials career, and who continues to ride several decades later has also thrown himself into the ring, with newly appointed Ossa importer Nigel Birkett threatening to dig his works Suzuki out of the shed for this very special occasion.

Although originating from a slightly younger vintage than the other runners, both Gas Gas UK boss John Shirt and Woody Hole can still be classed as veteran campaigners having both competed in Junior Kickstart way back when Tom and Jerry was still cool amongst the kids. Whilst Shirt was runner up to a certain Steve Colley, Woody was an actual winner of the youth competition all those years ago.

The field would not be complete without a foreign flavour and this comes in the form of ex triple World Trial champion Thierry Michaud and Mecatecno supremo Luis Gallach, the latter now working with Albert Cabestany. This overseas duo proved highly popular when they took part in the hugely successful past masters trials at the previous Grand Prix events hosted at Hawkstone Park that even attracted the current crop of trials stars as keen spectators.

The sections are completed, the theme tune music is ready, and the cobwebs are currently being blown off man and machine. Kickstart - The Return will take place exclusively on Friday 25th June at 1.30pm as part of the Grand Prix programme. Later the same day a group of invited Scottish Youth riders will also have their opportunity to perform over the same course in front of an expected large crowd who will also get to witness You Tube Street Trial Phenomenon Danny MacAskill in action.
