ride Dunwich Dynamo Run
Sam Toy and I rode the Dunwich Dynamo Run (cycle ride) last weekend. It's a 120 mile ride from London Fields, Hackney to Dunwich on the Suffolk Coast, near Southwold. We got the train from Colchester to Liverpool St with our bikes, cycled to the start which was at 8.30pm. It was slow getting out of London because of the other bicycles, the commuters, cars and such. The course was arrowed a bit like an enduro. We rode through Epping Forest through much of Essex countryside. We stopped at the halfway point in Sible Heddingham (home of Jim Aim M/cs) for an hour -- a designated food and drink area, where we had George and Steve manning the check with pasta, energy bars and drinks. It was about midnight. Then we rode the graveyard shift to the coast. We hung onto some semi-pro looking guys (they had their names on their backs, just like championship guys in enduro -- we figured they must be good), going about 30mph for ages -- fantastic. That got us to Needham Market, 3/4 distance. Another designated stop, more energy drink there and moral support from George and Steve. Last two hours then, through hilly Suffolk countryside to meet the sunrise over the North Sea! We even managed a sprint finish. Total moving time was seven hours, average speed 26km/h, top speed 56km/h, energy burn was a whopping 6500 calories (all measured on my Garmin computer). The organisers suggested most would take 9-10 hours. Really pleased, great for fitness and great fun. Very tired the next day but thoroughly recommend for anyone to have a go -- brilliant for fitness. Doing it next year for sure! |
