Motorbike event helps raise Ł6350 for Air Ambulance

The village of Caio proudly lies between the market towns of Llandovery, Llandeilo and Lampeter, at the southern tip of the Cambrian Mountains and beside the Brecon Beacons National Park. The village and its surrounding area is steeped in history and folklore. The area attracts local fishermen as the rivers Cothy and Twrch unite in this parish and visitors are attracted here not simply for its sheer beauty but also to visit the nearby Dolaucothi Gold Mines and the impressive Church of St Cynwyl CAIO with its unique square embattled tower. The area also offers extensive countryside walks and horse riding opportunities.

However, just over a month ago, the village and CAIO forest came alive for a very different reason as it hosted the “Arwyn Rees CAIO enduro”. The event was hosted by the “Dyfed Dirt Bike Club” which is a local motorcycle club whose aims and objectives include the promotion and safeguarding of legal off road riding. The event was supported by numerous different landowners who very kindly allowed the club to access their land. They included the Forestry Commission and Cilgawod farm.

The event was a fundraiser for the Air Ambulance in memory of local family man Arwyn Rees who was tragically killed at work during the autumn months of 2011. A total of Ł6350 was successfully raised for the Air Ambulance thanks to the event itself, the various sponsors and the numerous generous donations made by local people competitors, club officials and visitors. A tremendous amount of effort was made by Dyfed Dirt Bike Club members and local people to ensure a successful and safe event was held. All gave their time in a voluntary capacity. An impressive 88 riders entered the event with a high number being local entrants but some had travelled from as far as Cornwall and Somerset.

The event was unique because it was able to offer entries not only for solo motorcycles but also sidecars and quads. The catering was provided by local residents and there was a real social ambience to the whole weekend. It was a good example of how to bring people together in a very positive and fun way.

Class winners for the “Arwyn Rees CAIO enduro 2012” were as follows:
Experts: Robert Rees (Penycae)
Sidecar Experts: G Andrew & G Edyvean (Cornwall)
