The final stop on the 10 Round NEXC Championship was held at the picturesque Westwood, the former coal mining site now a diverse woodland just outside the famous Yorkshire town of Barnsley. The event was organized by Total enduro the most rider friendly club in the known universe.

Total Enduro asked inspirational XC course designer John Kerwin to stand in for Graham Jarvis who is away on extreme enduro duty. John Kerwin and his crew set out an awesome course utilizing all the best features of the woodland. Construction started mid-week using a team of highly skilled course technicians working around the clock, the long and arduous task was only finished late Saturday afternoon. The exhausted crew had an early night ready for the morning and the final round of the 2013 NEXC.

As dawn broke and the riders started to arrive the extra friendly staff were in action signing on the riders for the first race. By 8.50am the youth riders were on the start line, John Kerwin gave the riders a full safety brief before starting the race at 9am with the Rock Oil starting flag.

The season long battle in the youth championship between Nathan Cooke and Matt Trigg immediately continued, either one could still win the championship. First back to lap scoring was Matt but Nathan was hot on his heels only a second separated them. This ding dong battle continued until lap seven when Nathan dropped 20 seconds from this point on Matt Trigg gradually pulled away and continued do so to take the win and the championship, Nathan Cooke second and second in the championship with Ryan Hoare third. Congratulations to all the youth finishers.

As the hard working Total Enduro crew implemented the changes to the course for the adult race which included a long section in the babbling brook and more of the superb flowing woodland. John Kerwin was already briefing the lines of adult riders ready for the start. At 11 am the flag was waved signalling the start of the final round of the 2013 NEXC. Luke flack aka the 'Flackstar' was straight into the lead, leading the pack through the babbling brook and up the steep bracken climb that would catch many of the riders out. Lee Sampson was right behind the Flackstar as they pressed on through the woodland, Flackstar got to lap scoring first with Sampson still in touch. Sampson held on to Flackstar for part of the second lap but his lack of bike time showed as he started to drop back. Joe Chambers moved into second place but by lap 9 was more than a minute down on Flackstar. On lap 10 Flackstar refuelled, Chambers closed the gap, on lap 11 he reduced the gap by another 20 seconds, but up the big climb on lap 12 the bike lost its drive as the front sprocket shed its teeth, the game was over for big Joe!! Now Sampson was back to second place, Luke Lusher moved into third as the 2.5 hour duration approached. The Flackstar aware of his lead waited 30 seconds at lap scoring rather than put in another lap to take the win by 5 minutes from Sampson second and Lusher third.

Mark Marshal took the Expert class win, while Geraint Rogers mastered the vet's class with a win. Paul Askew won the super vets 050 classes. Ellie Cooke put in a great ride to finish third in the Sportsman E1 class and best lady. Well done to all the other class winners and all the riders for supporting the event.

This was possibly the best course ever at Westwood and we will return to the venue on December 27th for the HANGOVER SPECIAL XC. Don't forget Helmsley time card weekend on the 2/3rd November. Sat 2nd Nov is Vintage Enduro bikes and Sportsmen on modern bikes. Sunday 3rd November is a round of the NEEC - all classes.

TURBO TOM WINS WESTWOOD !!
ROUND 1 NEXC WESTWOOD

Westwood was bathed in glorious spring sunshine as the riders arrived for round 1 of the NEXC championship. Graham Jarvis and his Total Enduro crew set out a challenging course around the 100 acre woodland venue. The course had a bit of everything, tricky stream crossings, hill climbs and descents, flowing trails all blended together to provide the rider with an enjoyable experience.

First away where the youth riders, on a shorter course than the adults. In to an early lead was Rhys Bradford in his first event , a lead he would hold for 3 laps until Doltan Shannon hit the front on lap 4 which he maintained until the finish. Results; 1 Doltan Shannon , 2 Rhys Bradford ,3 Dan Lappin. Megan Wilson won the youth ladies from Kate Smith. The riding shirts of NREC were prominent in the youth race as the NREC continue in their commitment to support the clubs youth riders .

After a few course adjustments the track was ready for the adult race. Bang on 11.30am, event director Graham Jarvis flagged the Championship, Expert, 040 riders away, followed by the Clubman and then the Sportsman. In the Championship class Michael Briggs and Tom Healey diced for first place early on, but Tom soon upped the pace and settled in to the lead eventually winning by a lap. Tom completed 22 laps from Michael 21 laps in second , local rider Declan Helliwell was third also on 21 laps .

No Hangover for Helliwell

The Total Enduro track crew lead by Graham Jarvis set out an interesting and in some places challenging lap around Westwood for the Bank Holiday Hangover XC, using the stream bed, some technical climbs in the quarry and a tricky log section all linked together by the superb flowing woodland giving an average lap time of around 11 minutes.

The 11am start was delayed by 10 minutes in order to accommodate the higher than expected day entries, the experts and 040'S were away first followed by the clubmen and finally the sportsman. 040 rider Justin Carter lead the riders around the first lap, but as the leaders settled in to the race Declan Helliwell and Joe Chambers took turns to lead the experts this continued for most of the 2.5 hour event until Joe suffered problems on the second to last lap, Declan pushed on to a fine expert win with James Reeve second and Grant Hacking third. Justin Carter was really pilling on the laps in the super competitive 040 class and took the win by a lap from Jason Crossland these two were that good that they would have finished first and second in the experts class proving that old is best !!

Josh Law had a 4 minute winning margin over Andrew Sykes in the clubman class both finishing on 18 laps. Mike Gilby won the sportsman from Darren Skillin, with David Heath third. Tara Johnson had a great ride in the sportsmen class finishing a fine 12th place and top lady.

A big thanks to all the riders that turned up we were shocked with the amount of day entries that came and pre booking would help to solve this problem. We start 2012 with a 7 round club championship from February to September some brand new venues and some old. 3 of these events will also form part of the excellent NEXC championship, I have checked all the published dates in the North and as far as I can see I have avoided clashing dates, the formula for events in 2012 will be, Saturday open practice for youth and adults 10am till 3pm, Sunday 9 am youth race, 11 am adults race. Realizing that we are in a major economic recession I have set the fees at affordable levels, club membership £6.00, adult race £40 Saturday practice £35, race and practice special deal £55 riders can pre book and pay right up until 7pm Friday night, pay on the day welcome but its more expensive.
