Dyfed Dolgoch Sprint Enduro 2021

Report and photos Gary Jones

Dust would not be a problem as youngsters from all over the principality arrived in West Wales for the second round of the Welsh Open Youth Hare and Hounds series.

The Saturday event organised by the Dyfed Dirt Bike Club ( DDBC ) attracted a healthy entry of over 130 riders ranging in age from 4 - 17 years, old but with heavy overnight rain the tracks they would race on had become very muddy and would test the riding ability to the extreme.

With three races during the day catering for different classes and age groups race one would kick into gear at 12pm with the Beginner / Novice riders heading off the start line on the fields of Dolgoch farm Brongest near NC Emlyn. After 40 minutes of hard riding it would be Abergavenny rider Theo Jones who crossed the finish line first on his Honda with 13 laps followed by Richard Price from Llandinam claiming second place and 12 laps whilst Crossgates rider Alfie Lewis took the final step on the podium with third overall and 11 laps.

Race 2 would see the riders head into woodland as well as race on the slippery grassy fields that had newly been cut for silage, it would be Gruff Morgan from Aberystwyth who took the win with 10 laps finishing a clear two and a half mins ahead of runner up William Evans whilst third place would go to Charlie Waters from Beriew finishing just another 12 seconds down on Evans.

Race 3 would be a full blown lap using fields on both sides of the valley as well as some far more technical sections in the wood but the riding capabilities of the youth riders took it in their stride with no complaints. The race was dominated by Sion Evans on his Husqavarna bike taking the overall win on the day with the Lampeter rider knocking in 9 laps whilst runner up Rhydian Rees also riding a Husqavarna the Cilmeri rider managed 8 laps. Also on 8 laps was Ifan Jones from Pontrhydyfendigaid claiming third overall on his KTM.

The Sunday morning dawned and would see the DDBC hold a sprint enduro at the same venue with another entry of around 70 riders with some of the youth riders from the previous days racing pitting themselves against some of Britains top Enduro Championship riders. With the track having had further rain overnight it would bring out the true enduro rider come the end of the days racing. Charlie Chater would take the overall win on his Yamaha whilst Edward Jones from Llanidloes would finish as runner up riding a KTM and Jack Heath claiming the final step on the podium. Sion Evans from Lampeter the first of the youth riders would finish 4th overall and claim a class win on his Husqavarna. In the 12-15 youth class Alfie Davies took the win ahead of Rees Jones whilst the Clubman win went to Dan Lewis flood by Liam Ryland as runner up. The Expert class saw Adam James chain victory followed home by Ash Jones 2nd and Aled Humphreys from Llan Ffestiniog 3rd.
