Crescent KTM Rider Profile
Daryl Bolter

With the motorsport summer break in full swing, Crescent Motorcycles is keeping you close to the action with a behind-the-scenes look at one of our KTM Enduro riders, Daryl Bolter…

At 29 years of age, Daryl Bolter has been riding for most of his life. Starting at just 4 years old and moving on to schoolboy motocross at 6, Bolter rode consistently, and to a national level, until he was 16. It was then he was given the chance to try enduro riding and as they say, the rest is history!

Gaining his bike licence at 17, Bolter began his enduro career with a Husqvarna contract riding for HuskySport before moving to the KTM brand. Having only ever competed on either Husqvarna or KTM machinery, Bolter has taken seven British titles, two European Championships - at both junior and senior level - and placed third in the 2008 World Junior Championship while winning the 125 class in the same year. At just 19 years of age, Bolter became the youngest ever winner of the Welsh two-day Enduro - a competition he has gone on to win five times; and while a collection of rib injuries suffered at Westwood in South Yorkshire during a recent BSEC curtailed his aim of achieving his sixth victory this year, leaving him runner-up, he fully intends to contest and regain his title in the future, a feat which will see him equal third in the event’s standings of most wins since the contest’s inception.

2014 finds Bolter competing in both the British Enduro and British Sprint Enduro Championships and despite the season not getting off to the best of starts- after last year’s dislocated collarbone - he continues to defend a top five position in both. “Helmsley was my best result so far this year, with a podium, which is where I should be really, that’s the sort of pace. You’ve got Danny McCanney, who’s a full-time factory ride, 22 years old with no fear and no worries and he’s dominating at the moment. Second place is Tom Sagar who’s KTM UK rider as well, he’s the next step for me, I should be on his pace. Third through sixth between me, Steve Holcombe (Crescent KTM) and a couple of Husky riders are all very close, so it’s very tight racing”.

Recently married (29th May this year) Bolter juggles his full-time job and family life with his racing career and training. “It’s difficult; I’ve got a young family, but I’m lucky, my other half is quite fit and active too, so we take it in turns and it means I don’t get stuck in a routine. Some days I’ll have the kids, she’ll get in from the gym and I’ll go out on the mountain bike, or I’ll go to the pool in the morning before work, and just fit it in when I can. I also have a sponsor- Tough Plant Hire - who pays me to ride one day a week, so I can train and ride on that day.” Competing regularly at local level also allows him time on the bike in between national competition.

The South Coast racer’s long term goal is to continue riding and stay injury free. “I don’t bounce as well and it takes longer to heal these days, but the older I’m getting, the hungrier I’m getting. You almost take it for granted when you’re younger and a paid rider. When you lose the paid contract and you really have to fight for your position, you appreciate it more and it brings you back to reality. There are lots of young fast riders coming in, so I’m almost fighting for my ride again, I’m almost hungrier for it now just so that I can carry on riding. I don’t want to lose my ride and I don’t think I could afford to continue without the support from KTM and Crescent. The goal is to keep promoting myself and ride at a pace that’s competitive. I’ve always said I would stop when I stopped enjoying it, but the older I get the more I seem to enjoy it!”

Daryl Bolter is next in action on his Crescent KTM 350 EXC-F for round seven and eight of the British Enduro Championship in Rhayader, Mid-Wales on 30th and 31st August, with the British Sprint Enduro Championship’s concluding rounds scheduled for 4th and 5th October. He will also be attending the Crescent Motorcycles KTM Off-Road day at the Rogershill Raceway in Bere Regis, Dorset on Sunday 28th September alongside teammate Steve Holcombe to demonstrate the latest models and answer questions from participants. Tickets for the event cost £30 and full details and registration are available from the Crescent Motorcycles dealership.

SANDBLASTIC BOLTER
Boxing Day Enduro at Slab Common

Hosted by Witley & District MCC - Report Teamsnapper

The weather conditions and amount of rain prior to The BXDE could not have been worse but hats off to the Witley club as they worked tirelessly to make sure the event with a full entry of 180 riders went ahead and wisely shortened the lap so that the lower skill level riders could endure the wrath of Slab Common.

Championship Class
Daryl Bolter and Slab Common are a perfect combination akin to Bread and Butter or Tea and Biscuits and today was no different and led from start to finish except lap one which was led by expert Ben Wibberley, Aaron Smith on a borrowed bike that would have been better suited in Lord Montagu's Motor Museum at Beaulieu put an amazing show on to keep with Bolter and kept the huge crowd entertained but alas it was short lived as the old girl took in too much water but still managed 3rd place as Bolter controlled proceedings at the front to take victory and post fastest lap of the day, runner up Dan Alldred who was not that keen to start had a blinding race and looked the happiest out there and certainly enjoyed his BXDE.

Expert Class
Ben Wibberley not only won his class but also 2nd overall with only other rider to match Bolters 16 laps, also led the race for a lap and posted fastest lap of class so a very successful day for Ben and his new steed, Runner up in class and 3rd overall was The Kerbinator Mark Kirby who just never gives in and in these conditions he was like a pig in pooh and very much deserved his result, 3rd and his first ride as an Expert rider was Dom Wilson who shocked me today with his grit and aggressiveness and that formula sure worked well for the expectant father to be.

Vet A Class
My prediction for this class top 3 was not too bad as got 2 out of the 3 and the missing one did get fastest lap of the class before his DNF, which left Steve White, Daz Lee and James Brown fighting for the win and i feel justice prevailed today as so many events and races Steve White is the bridesmaid but today he nailed it from Veteran newcomer Daz Lee who will be a class contender next year, 3rd on a new bike and new kit which totally threw me was James Brown.... no not the Soul Master but James Brown the Sand Master and he certainly enjoyed his BXDE with one of his best rides ever.

Vet B Class
Many things can be heard whistling through the trees at Slab Common and some will unnerve you others make you chuckle but nothing can prepare you for the sound of Martin Turner on his 125 Two Stroke having its engine screaming, swinging arm deep in sand being strangled within an inch of its life for 12 laps but as the saying goes "Treat em mean to keep them keen" and believe me that 125 smoker was keen, keen enough to take the class win and fastest lap in class although he was kept on his toes by the likeable Lewie Davis who seems to have his appetite for the sport back which is great to see, 3rd and i can assure you he will be still smiling with that result was Peter Moller.

Clubman A Class
Gav Maggs certainly knows when to dig deep to try and find that little bit extra and today he dug deep not only to take the win but to have kept the pack behind him when it mattered and was very much the class act, The pack leader was West Country rider Brendan Griffiths who was a true Wild West rider today and hung on to his steed like a rodeo and gave great entertainment value, 3rd was Niles Reid who as usual battled with good friend Josh Kirby who can take solace as he managed to get fastest lap of class.

Clubman B Class
Brett Wilkinson won this class but had to battle hard against Brad Warton (Runner Up) , both were so equally matched lap after lap it was a shame to for both not to share top spot, Chris Welch did not look like he was enjoying himself but true to character he kept moving and will be delighted with podium.

Sportsman/Evo Class
Not often a Trials bike will beat an Enduro bike but in such conditions like today and the skill of the rider Miles Carruthers took victory and from what i could see never looked that much in trouble, runner up was the big man from The West Kirk Giles whom will never forget his first visit too Slab Common, 3rd was Chris Heane who seemed to find a rhythm and tempo and just kept to it and produced a deserved podium.
Evo class was won by popular SEEC stalwart Colin Fox who also got fastest lap in class as well.

Bad day at the office for
Crescent KTM's Daryl Bolter
Saints Well Mid Wales
26th May

Crescent KTM's Daryl Bolter didn't have the best of days in the Elite Class at round 3 of the British Sprint Enduro Championship which was held at Saints Well in Mid Wales. Daryl suffered a mix of arm pump, set-up issues and costly mistakes that led to the Crescent KTM racer only managing to record an eighth place finish overall from the event. Bolter was disappointed with his final result, but was pleased that he was on hand to assist Steve Holcombe on his comeback and help him with his lines at the fast Saints Well circuit.

Daryl Bolter: “It wasn't a very good event for me, the weather was brilliant, sunshine all day, the track was fast and bumpy and very physical and I suffered a lot with arm pump. The first test was ok and then it just went downhill, a mixture of arm pump, set-up issues and some mistakes made for a bad day at the office. This has been the worst ride this year so far for me, but that’s sometimes how racing goes and I need to regroup and get back on the pace for the Welsh two-day coming up soon. It was great to see Steve back on the track and looking sharp. I hoped I helped him a bit on the day with some advice and showing him some useful lines.”

Crescent KTM will next be in action in the BSEC at Llangrove near Monmouth in Wales on the 6th and 7th July, where Steve Holcombe will be looking to continue with his comeback and Daryl Bolter will be aiming to get back to winning ways.

Bolter took the victory on
the Crescent Racing
KTM

at RD1 of the REME Summer Series at Slab Common

As always Team REME put on a great event at Slab Common, despite some heavy rainfall the day and night before the ground was not as bad as people imagined and help up well albeit some very deep sand in places that required lots of right hand to get through if you dared otherwise paddling them legs was the other choice. A grid of nearly 100 riders is fantastic for a midweek evening event; the lap was 3.5 miles and 2 hours duration. Details

Bolter scores a double podium in Yorkshire for Crescent KTM

Crescent KTM Enduro racer Daryl Bolter took two second-place finishes at last weekend’s British Enduro Championship round from Helmsley Forest in Yorkshire.

The weather on Saturday morning didn’t look too inviting, but by the time Bolter headed off, the North Yorkshire moors were bathed in bright sunshine. With a strong field of over 160 riders assembled for the two-day event, Bolter had tough competition, but handled the pace well to run in second-place all-day long, despite hitting a fallen tree and getting kicked off his bike. He luckily – and amazingly – landed next to the bike and had to run alongside to try and get back on.

On the Sunday Bolter improved on his time from the first-day and was a lot closer to the top-spot, but an electrical problem caused him an issue on the last-lap. Bolter decided to take things sensibly to secure the points and brought his Crescent KTM 350EXC-F home in a well-deserved second-place. Tom Sagar, also on a KTM, took victory in both races.

Bolter is now in second position overall in the British Enduro Championship, the next round is the Knighton event in South Wales over the weekend of July the 13th and 14th.

Daryl Bolter:

“The weekend went very well and I was second on both days to fellow KTM rider Tom Sagar, which was good because he rode awesome in the two races. On the Saturday I couldn’t quite run the pace of Tom and I was in second all day with the third-placed rider not too far behind. I was in a position where I knew I could find more speed, but couldn’t put my finger on what I needed to do to find those few seconds.

“We made a few changes to the suspension and put a different front tyre on Saturday evening trying to find that extra time for Sunday and it worked because my time in the first test was much better. I set the same time as Tom was doing on Saturday, but unfortunately for me he went even better than he did on day-one. I lost a bit of time on the last-lap, as the electric start stopped working and I was nervous of stalling, so I just rode sensibly to get the points in the bag! I’m happy to come away with two podiums and second overall in the championship, we move to Wales for the next round and hopefully I can continue to pick up the good results and try for a win – or two - there.”

Double podium for Bolter at BEC first round

Crescent KTM Enduro racer Daryl Bolter made a great start to the British Enduro Championship last weekend by taking two third places on his KTM 350EXC-F at the first round of the season which was held at Elgin in Scotland.

Bolter produced two strong performances in his first event of the new Enduro season that saw him race in bright sunshine and through hard frosts, as well as sandy and icy sections at the Lossiemouth circuit near Inverness. Despite not quite feeling 100% right, which Bolter put down to new season and first event nerves making him a bit anxious. The 28-year-old from Salisbury soon got to grips with the terrain and produced some consistent riding in what at times were treacherous conditions. Bolter was happy with his performance, but still thinks that there is more to come as the season progresses, he felt a bit rusty after a long winter and also had to deal with a persistent wrist problem that gave him grip problems at times, especially in the beach sections that were very bumpy and fast. The Crescent KTM man also had to contend with the local Police, who stopped many riders on a road section of the course to check the legality of the machines, Bolter didn’t escape and was fined for an undersized number plate. Tom Sagar, also on a KTM, took the honours on both days by winning the two races, with Jamie Lewis taking second place in both events.

Bolter was Crescent KTM’s only participant at the event as team-mate Steve Holcombe is still recovering from a shoulder operation and hopes to be back racing soon. The next time that Bolter will be in action in the BEC will be at Helmsley in Yorkshire, for the second round of the season over the weekend of 4/5 May.

Daryl Bolter:

“I rode ok over the weekend and finished third overall on both days, it wasn't my best riding and I need to improve in some areas, especially the beach sections that made the sand bowl at the Natterjack Enduro look like a child’s sand pit! The Crescent KTM 350 EXC-F didn’t miss a beat and was a joy to ride - I felt that I bonded with it well in my first outing. After an 11-hour drive to Scotland we arrived at Elgin and the tests looked awesome, with some very difficult sections. All was going well until we got to the road section where the Police were waiting to issue anybody that wasn't 100% legal with fines - which was the whole field in one way or another! Luckily we managed to get word back and only about 20 or so got stopped, unfortunately I was one of the riders stopped and I was fined £60 for an undersized number plate! I’m now looking forward to the first round of the BESC and then the next round of the BEC in Yorkshire next month. As always thanks to all my sponsors and helpers for all your support.”
