Standerwick on the Wiltshire/Somerset border, another part of the vast Longleat estate, was the venue selected to host round 5 of the 2009 National Hewitt XC Championship on Sunday. The predominantly tight, technical woodland circuit ,cleverly plotted by the organising Midwest MCC and with the going rather on the soft side, was to produce a super test for all competing riders and a very exciting finish in the Experts class. After three hours of entertaining XC action, Matt Ridgway (above) was just 31 seconds ahead of a very determined Rich Warner in a contest which had seen the lead change hands on several occasions. The South Reading Jack Stocker Hare & Hounds at Ashdown Farm, Blewbury, Oxon on 25th July 2009. After the poor weather in the week leading up to the event, all the competitors (and organisers) were relieved to find the sun shinning down on this rather awesome looking track. The huge dips down into the valley can look intimidating at first, but are great fun once ridden for the first time. Quite surprisingly the going on all of the enduro loop was as dry as a bone and only the sections of the mx track that were covered by the trees remained damp.
Many thanks to the South Reading MCC (and all the marshals) for laying on another well-organised and enjoyable event. Results Full Report by John Muizelaar

Following Saturday’s preparation in glorious sunshine the Enduro devil once again popped his head up and ensured that pre-race it rained heavy with strong gusts of wind. Just before the start however the rain stopped and the weather conditions were ideal unlike some of the going and the soaked marshals. Out of the 75 entries, 68 signed on, one missed signing on after his dog went walkabout in the Welsh hills for 2 hours. Nick Elder put his back out thinking about riding the event and Owain Peckover discovered he was ill on Sunday morning after looking out the window and seeing rain. Full Report

Weather conditions were much kinder for the final round compared to the heat and dust of Rd 2. A good field of riders sat at the start in anticipation as to what Team REME had done to the course this time out and bang on six o'clock the Experts were away to find out how easy or difficult the 5.8 mile course was? Kev Murray (Team REME) decided to ride the 300m start straight on his back wheel and was first into the wooded section. He was closely followed by James Jackman (series leader and eventual series winner) with the rest of the Expert's pushing hard. Kev blasted away and had a 30 second lead as he started his second lap, from then on he never looked back and eventually finished the 2 hour race with a 3m 24 second lead. James Jackman (pictured leftt) was in a good tussle for most of the race with Dan Beaven and James Giddings but was too strong for the both of them finishing second on the night and winning the Expert Championship.Full report
